Local Painting Contractors San Juan Puerto Rico 00939: Secret Tips!
When mixed colours first bump into one another, there are tiny inconsistencies in the mixture that help add vividness and interest to your paint. So, when you combine colours to create a mixture it’s important to make sure that you only mix them as much as necessary before applying the stroke. If you over-mix two colours, you will turn your interesting mixture into a flat and uninteresting pile of paint.
Paint color may vary slightly from one can to the next. If you have to open a new can in the middle of a wall, the difference may be noticeable. Mixing the paints together eliminates the problem. It’s best to estimate the amount of paint you’ll need and mix it in a 5-gallon bucket (a process called “boxing”). When coverage is difficult to estimate, add more rather than less. You can always pour the leftover back into cans. For large jobs, use the bucket and a roller screen rather than a roller tray. It’s much faster to load your roller with the screen than to use a roller pan. Simply dunk the roller into the paint bucket, then roll it along the screen until it stops dripping.
Underpaint: Loose, sketchy monochrome under painting of shapes, darks, and mid tones with very diluted paint. This will set up your values. If it looks good in a monochrome and you don’t screw up, and follow your values: Roberts your Mothers Brother! Remember just because its dark doesn’t mean it’s black.
Squint! To see values, simplify. Even if you’re using a photo, I know you’ll look like your mother trying to read the white pages but I swear it works. Half clothes your eyes and look at what your painting, that’s the look you should be going for. Just don’t squint when you look at your painting or you’ll have a slurried mess.
Not only does it make the painting process quicker and cleaner, but since the lid is airtight, it makes your paint last so much longer.
Avoid having ‘heavy hands’ with your paintbrush. Sometimes the pressure that you apply with a stroke can make the difference between perfection and a mess. The heavier your pressure, the more your paints will blend and create ridges along the sides of your brushstrokes. Get familiar with how your light, medium, and heavy strokes look on the canvas and vary your pressure appropriately to achieve your desired effects.
Use the correct type of clear coat finish. This is something I wish I had known when I first started painting furniture, as I ended up having to redo several pieces due to using the wrong clear coat. For most furniture paint projects these days, I use Polycrylic as my top coat. It gives me the durable finish I want, but doesn’t yellow over time like Polyurethane will. I definitely painted a few pieces back in the day and watched my pretty white paint turn yellow because I used Polyurethane instead of Polycrylic. Also, I like Polycrylic because it cleans up with water. You’ll have to use mineral spirits for Polyurethane.
Remember that you can paint directly onto a wet surface or wait for it to dry and put wet paint over that. Paints will blend on the canvas when working wet-in-wet, which is great for getting transitions or gradients. Painting with a dry brush will give you a more textural effect, which is perfect for painting brick or dirt.
Use mineral spirits to clean oil based paint off brushes. The vinegar trick won’t work too well if you’re using oil based paints or topcoats. Instead, try using mineral spirits to clean your brushes. I threw away so many brushes after using them to put topcoats on furniture. Now that I know about mineral spirits, I can reuse the same nice brush over and over. My favorite is Klean Strip because it’s super effective, but has a way less toxic odor than other brands I’ve tried.
Lap marks are those ugly stripes caused by uneven layers of paint buildup. They occur when you roll over paint that’s already partly dry. (In warm, dry conditions, latex paint can begin to stiffen in less than a minute!) The key to avoiding lap marks is to maintain a “wet edge,” so each stroke of your roller overlaps the previous stroke before the paint can begin to dry. To maintain a wet edge, start near a corner and run the roller up and down the full height of the wall, moving over slightly with each stroke. Move backward where necessary to even out thick spots or runs. Don’t let the roller become nearly dry; reload it often so that it’s always at least half loaded. Keep the open side of the roller frame facing the area that’s already painted. That puts less pressure on the open side of the roller, so you’re less likely to leave paint ridges.
Edges: Put a dab of COMPLEMENTARY colours around edges of focal points to pop. Soften and/or cool receding edges that are not near the focal point. That’s ten but wait don’t order yet…. here’s a freebie!
Pour all of the cans through the mesh into the bucket, so any sediment or dried paint will be removed. It’s okay to overestimate how much paint you will need if you aren’t sure because you can always pour the paint back into the cans. Use a wooden paint stick to thoroughly stir the paint, and then you may begin the painting process.
Pros usually follow a certain order when painting a room. They paint the trim first, then the ceiling, then the walls. That’s because it’s easier (and faster) to tape off the trim than to tape off the walls. And you certainly don’t want to tape them both off! When painting the trim, you don’t have to be neat. Just concentrate on getting a smooth finish on the wood. Don’t worry if the trim paint gets onto the walls. You’ll cover it later when painting the walls. Once the trim is completely painted and dry (at least 24 hours), tape it off (using an “easy release” painter’s tape), then paint the ceiling, then the walls.
